TRAINING INITIATIVE OF THE YEAR WINNER E POPPLETON & SON

Judges citation

Poppleton had set out an objective to ensure that all of its operatives with a National Agreement Grade of Craftsmen or above, would obtain National Vocational Qualification, Level 3 in Ductwork installation by the year 2001.

This policy to offer personal development and training- which is particularly aimed at the older craftsman – was praised by the judges as an "excellent initiative". The fresh approach with a well thought out structure was also applauded – along with its good, clear set of objectives.

Commentary

In our seventy fifth year, Gareth Vaughan (managing director) was pleased to receive the winners trophy from Jonathan Ross at the awards ceremony held in the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane on April 14th 1999. As in past years, winners are unable to respond on the night (Gwyneth Paltrow please take note) and address the 800 people attending the ceremony.

However, speaking after the event, Gareth thanked Vaillant for sponsoring the award and the other finalists, Hotchkiss Ductwork, Satchwell Control Systems and Woods Air Movement for providing such strong competition. Thanks were also expressed to Keith Elphick (National Assessor for Ductwork Installation) to Gareth Keller (Ductwork Group Secretary) and finally to HVCA for the development of the NVQ awards on behalf of our industry sector.

We also hope that it will provide a spur to our competitors to fully utilize the training opportunities provided by the Association (HVCA) and thus lead to a greater take-up of NVQ’s under APL (accreditation of Prior Learning) within the sector."
